Dr Ashok Kumar, a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation programme in Pakistan, recently appeared on the popular 'Cross Question' talk show on Cee TV—a top-rated Pakistani web channel based in Karachi.

Respected TV anchor Riaz Aajiz conducted a lively and wide-ranging interview with Dr Kumar, who gave a comprehensive introduction to the Transcendental Meditation technique. Dr Kumar's dynamic presentation covered many topics including what Transcendental Meditation is, how it differs from other meditation practices, and an overview of extensive scientific research documenting its many benefits—for example reduced stress, increased integration of brain functioning, and improved health.

The interview, originally broadcast 31 August and 3 September, is conducted in the Pakistani language. However, interspersed throughout Mr Aajiz's penetrating questions and Dr Kumar's explanations are many English words and phrases indicating the effortlessness and naturalness of the practice, the peaceful state it produces in mind and physiology, and its effects in promoting increased energy, creative intelligence, and learning ability; decreased anxiety; increased self-actualization, etc.

Dr Kumar presented a series of charts printed in English summarizing scientific research on Transcendental Meditation—explaining, for example, that 'all the parts of the brain function together'. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in America, he said, has funded US$24 million in research investigating Transcendental Meditation and heart disease; included in his research review are NIH-funded studies that have found significant decreases in high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease risk factors.

The interview also brought out the programme's benefits in education and business, and its growing popularity among high-profile people including Oprah Winfrey, who earlier this year devoted an entire episode of her new 'Oprah's Next Chapter' TV show to Transcendental Meditation.

Dr Kumar also explained the purpose of Transcendental Meditation to unfold full mental potential and develop higher states of consciousness, as well as other research findings of decreased violence and conflict and increased positive trends in society—an effect produced by groups practising the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi programme, including Yogic Flying, together.

The 'Maharishi Effect' is the name given by scientists to this phenomenon of increased social coherence and harmony, in honour of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of Transcendental Meditation, who predicted it over 50 years ago.

Dr Kumar concluded by giving telephone and email contact information to find out more about the Transcendental Meditation programme in Pakistan, including schedules of introductory lectures and classes to learn the technique.
