The Transcendental Meditation programme in Croatia wants to help more people in the country learn about and enjoy the many scientifically validated benefits of practising the technique, including reduced stress, improved health, and development of integrated brain functioning.

One avenue to accomplish this is to make information about the programme more widely available via the Internet, said Vedran Turkalj, the new director of the Transcendental Meditation organization in Croatia, who is based in the capital, Zagreb.

Plans are underway, he said, to update and modernize the Croatian Transcendental Meditation website, and also to make more use of online advertising. People have been hearing about the programme often through word of mouth, from colleagues, friends, and family who have learned the technique.

Mr Turkalj, who has been practising Transcendental Meditation for 17 years, coordinates with teachers of the programme in the country, and with them is keen to bring meditation to a wider population.

A new Transcendental Meditation centre recently opened in Šibenik, and interest in Transcendental Meditation is rising in the area. Twelve local residents volunteered to maintain the centre and recently held an introductory lecture in the small town, as a result of which about 17 people planned to take the course.

Another area of focus is to offer more courses and services to those who have already learned Transcendental Meditation in Croatia.

A series of regular knowledge courses is being planned, as well as courses in advanced techniques of Transcendental Meditation. In addition, one of the first things Mr Turkalj is planning to do is organize weekend residence courses, 'starting in Zagreb, once every month'. Around the world, people who practise Transcendental Meditation enjoy the opportunity for deep rest, rejuvenation, and knowledge that these weekend courses provide.

Advanced programmes also will include the popular 16-lesson course in Maharishi Yoga Asanas.

Several recent international courses have drawn meditators from all over Europe, Mr Turkalj said, and these will continue to be offered in locations such as the beautiful island of Hvar.

'We have many beautiful places,' he said. 'Many people are thrilled with the Hvar courses, so we will do it again.'

One major goal is to create a Maharishi Peace Palace—a centre for all Transcendental Meditation-related activities. Inspired by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Peace Palaces are being planned and built in major cities around the world. A Peace Palace is often described as a 'lighthouse' radiating peace and coherence for the surrounding community and the nation, through group practice of Transcendental Meditation and its advanced programmes.

'A Peace Palace is not like all buildings,' Mr Turkalj commented. 'It has a different, special feeling inside.'
