The recent seven-day Vastu Builder Seminar at Maharishi European Research University (MERU) in the Netherlands drew 17 participants from 12 countries who took the course in residence, with many more in other locations who were connected by webinar.

The seminar continues a comprehensive programme of training in Maharishi Vastu* architecture, offered in three phases by the Institute for Vedic Architecture and City Planning, for architects, builders, developers, as well as other people who are interested in building their own homes, schools, and other types of Vastu buildings and developments.

The training started four years ago with the 10-hour Vastu Coordinator Course – Phase I, which has been offered online and taken by 1,000 people on all continents, explained Wojtek Skalski, one of the directors of the Institute. The purpose of this course is to give basic training in the principles of Vedic architecture, also known as Sthapatya Veda, for those want to represent and promote this knowledge and inspire new projects in their areas.

The second phase, called the Vastu Builder Seminar, was designed for those who want to build. It focuses on practical aspects of organizing and building projects, including Maharishi Vastu buildings or Vastu Peace Colonies and Garden Villages. It has been offered in the USA, Holland, Australia, Japan, Turkey, South Africa, Great Britain, and Russia. The recently completed Vastu Builder Seminar in MERU was the first time the course was also offered online. (The third phase is an eight-week training course to become a Maharishi Vastu architect.)

The seminar was conducted by leading Vedic architects Dr Skalski, Dr Christian Schweizer, and Dr Alberto Castano, the three directors of the Institute for Vedic Architecture and City Planning. The programme included presentations on many different aspects of Vastu construction, as well as practical planning for Vastu housing developments and Peace Colonies.

The training seminar started with an overview and detailed study of the Master Plan for the MERU campus in Vlodrop, and a tour of Vastu buildings constructed so far, conducted by Dr Schweizer.

Each participant received a copy of the first edition of the new manual How to Build a Peace Palace. The manual is based on the experience of building Europe's first Vastu Maharishi Peace Palace, in Erfurt near the centre of Germany—in record time and within budget. It was written and introduced at the seminar by Dr Lila Maria Hartmann-Stein, who with her husband, Dr Eckart Stein, oversaw the construction of the Erfurt Peace Palace, completed last October; they are now its directors.

As part of the seminar, participants formed teams to develop plans for Vastu communities in their home areas. Such developments are being planned or in progress in a number of countries, Dr Skalski said, and this exercise proved useful in helping participants plan for financing, local building and land issues, legal questions, and other elements that can come up in bringing their projects to fruition.

Each evening a leading Maharishi Vastu architect met with the seminar participants to hear their reports and give feedback on the progress.

In addition to the lessons and practicum exercises, there were lively question and answer sessions that covered a wide range of practical applications in terms of housing developments, Fortune-Creating homes, Maharishi Peace Palaces, Maharishi Peace Colonies, and Garden Villages—reflecting growing interest in and demand for Maharishi Vastu architecture around the world.

* Vastu refers to Vedic architecture—the complete knowledge of design and building in accord with natural law—brought to light from the Vedic literature by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and known as Maharishi Sthapatya Veda.
