''Transcendental Meditation in Israel, adopted by one or two per cent of the population of the country, and the attitude of the enemies around will change. This I am saying on the basis of what has been seen now in about 500 cities in the world today. When the number of people practising Transcendental Meditation rises to about one per cent of a city population, crime rate goes down, the negative tendencies are neutralized, and sickness goes down, and accidents go down. . . .

''The cultures will be integrated, the cultures will be powerful. They would know how to maintain their integrity and yet be useful to the neighbour, and yet take maximum advantage from the neighbour—give maximum to the neighbour without becoming disintegrated. That is the quality of national life that gets built up through meditation.''

Interview for Israeli TV, 14 March 1976

The home page of Global Good News is currently featuring this excerpt from an Israeli television interview with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1976.

In the interview Maharishi described recent scientific research findings of reduced crime rate in cities with one per cent of the population practising Transcendental Meditation. The same year, Maharishi introduced the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme.

In the decades since, a body of scientific research has developed, with more than 50 scientific demonstrations and 23 studies published in peer-reviewed journals, confirming that group practice of Transcendental Meditation and its advanced programmes by the square root of one per cent of a population creates a measurable influence of coherence, harmony, and peace for the whole society. Scientists have named this phenomenon the Maharishi Effect in honour of Maharishi who first predicted it in 1960.

One study, published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution, was conducted during the peak of the Lebanon war. A day-by-day study of a two-month assembly in Israel in 1983 showed that, on days when the number of participants in group practice of these peace-creating technologies of consciousness was high, war deaths in neighboring Lebanon dropped by 76%. In addition, crime, traffic accidents, fires, and other indicators of social stress in Israel (combined into a Composite Index) all correlated strongly with changes in TM group size. These results were subsequently replicated in seven consecutive experiments over a two-year period during the peak of the Lebanon war.
