On 7 October 2016 The Washington Post reported: Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his efforts to end a half-century of civil conflict in his nation, despite Colombian voters' shocking rejection of the peace deal just days ago. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it made the decision because of Santos's landmark efforts to halt one of the world's longest-running conflicts -- Marxist rebels battling government forces since the 1960s. The prize, which was first awarded in 1901, is the most prestigious of the series of awards endowed by the Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel.
